Chyulu Hills National Park, often referred to as the “Green Hills of Africa,” is a captivating and lesser-known gem in southeastern Kenya. Situated between Tsavo West and Amboseli National Parks, it offers a unique blend of volcanic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

Geography & Landscape

Established in 1983, Chyulu Hills National Park spans approximately 741 square kilometers in Makueni County. The park features a series of volcanic hills formed around 500 years ago, making them among the youngest volcanic mountains globally. The terrain includes rolling green hills, ancient lava flows, and notable geological features like the Leviathan Cave, one of the world’s longest lava tubes, stretching over 11 kilometers .

Wildlife & Ecosystem

The park’s diverse habitats—ranging from grasslands and woodlands to montane forests—support a variety of wildlife. Visitors may encounter elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, elands, and klipspringers. Predators such as lions and leopards also inhabit the area, alongside over 300 bird species, making it a haven for birdwatcher.
