Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park
Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve, located off Kenya’s southern coast near Shimoni in Kwale County, is a protected marine sanctuary encompassing approximately 39 square kilometers. Established in 1973 (Kisite) and 1978 (Mpunguti), it comprises four small islands surrounded by vibrant coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including over 250 species of reef fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and seasonal visitors like humpback whales and whale sharks.
Accessible only by boat from Shimoni, Kisite Mpunguti offers exceptional opportunities for snorkeling, scuba diving, and dolphin watching. The crystal-clear waters and thriving coral gardens make it a haven for marine enthusiasts. Visitors can also enjoy birdwatching, as the islands serve as important nesting sites for seabirds.
Managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service, the park emphasizes conservation and sustainable tourism. Entry fees contribute to the maintenance and protection of this unique ecosystem. For the best experience, plan your visit during the dry seasons, from July to October and January to March, when marine life is most active and sea conditions are favorable.
