Shimba Hills National Reserve

Shimba Hills National Reserve is a small but ecologically rich protected area located in Kwale County, approximately 33 kilometers southwest of Mombasa, Kenya. Covering around 300 square kilometers, it is one of the most important coastal forests in East Africa and is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The reserve offers a peaceful retreat from the busier coastal towns and is known for its unique blend of forest, grassland, and scenic hill landscapes.

Key Highlights:

  • Sable Antelope: Shimba Hills is the only place in Kenya where you can spot the rare and majestic sable antelope, making it a key attraction for wildlife enthusiasts.

  • Sheldrick Falls: One of the reserve’s most popular features, Sheldrick Falls is a picturesque 21-meter waterfall nestled deep within the forest. A guided walk to the falls offers a refreshing escape and the opportunity to explore the lush vegetation.

  • Rich Biodiversity: The reserve is a biodiversity hotspot, home to a variety of mammals including elephants, bushbucks, giraffes, warthogs, and primates like Sykes’ monkeys and baboons. It also harbors over 100 butterfly species and more than 200 bird species.

  • Shimba Hills Lodge: A popular tree-lodge built around a waterhole, providing visitors with a chance to watch wildlife up close in a tranquil setting.

  • Coastal Forests: The Shimba Hills are part of the East African Coastal Forests, a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot. The forested areas are home to many rare plant species, including medicinal and endemic plants.

Activities:

  • Game drives with scenic views from hilltops

  • Guided nature walks to Sheldrick Falls

  • Birdwatching and butterfly spotting

  • Forest walks to learn about medicinal plants

Scenic Views:

The elevated hills offer stunning panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, nearby farmlands, and neighboring Chyulu Hills. On a clear day, you can even spot the beaches of Diani from the higher vantage points.

Best Time to Visit:

Shimba Hills can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons (June to October and January to February) are best for wildlife sightings and nature walks. The reserve is cooler and more humid than the surrounding coastal areas due to its elevation.
